Shifting from traditional approaches to intensive horticulture
In October 2016, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the support of UNDP’s ‘Business Forum of Uzbekistan (Phase III)’ project will organize series of workshops in six regions of the country. Around 600 farmers will benefit and increase their knowledge on modern apple growing techniques, as well as develop practical skills to improve the efficiency of gardening.
The workshops will focus on introducing intensive gardening approaches to increase yields and will include both theoretical and practical parts to enable participants to practice gained knowledge and strengthen new skills.
All participants will receive specially published practical handbooks on producing apple crops using intensive farming methods in Uzbekistan, containing information on issues arising in practice. Publication of the handbook will be supported by GIZ Programme ‘Sustainable Economic Development in Selected Regions of Uzbekistan’ financed by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented jointly with the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The practical seminars will be arranged for the farmers in Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Ferghana, Andijan, Namangan and Tashkent regions in accordance with the seminar programme.
It is expected, that the practical seminars will raise farmers’ awareness on apple cultivation methodologies, introduction of modern technologies in agriculture and improve yields by implementing intensive gardening techniques. In the future, these improvements will open opportunities to create new jobs for the population in rural areas, to ensure their stable income and better quality of life, as well as to improve competitiveness of the agricultural sector of Uzbekistan at international markets.
The workshops will be organized with financial support from the South African ‘Sasol’ company.
